Understanding how your freight is classified can mean big savings.
When shipping via Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) codes play a vital role in how your freight is priced, handled, and processed.
These codes are managed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) and are used to classify items based on:
Each product is assigned a specific NMFC Item Number and a corresponding freight class, ranging from 50 (cheapest) to 500 (most expensive).
Big updates are coming to the NMFC system. Starting in July 2025, over 2,000 commodities without special handling needs will shift to a density-based classification system with 13 new freight class tiers.
Freight Density (lbs/ftΒ³) | Freight Class |
---|---|
Less than 1 | 400 |
1 β 1.99 | 300 |
2 β 3.99 | 250 |
4 β 5.99 | 175 |
6 β 7.99 | 125 |
8 β 9.99 | 100 |
10 β 11.99 | 92.5 |
12 β 14.99 | 85 |
15 β 22.49 | 70 |
22.5 β 29.99 | 65 |
30 β 34.99 | 60 |
35 β 49.99 | 55 |
50 or greater | 50 |
These changes will simplify the classification process, improve pricing accuracy, and reduce errors.
